Classical Mechanics

Fall 2007

ASSIGNMENTS

Homework:
Weekly problem sets will be assigned to elucidate the material covered in lectures and teach you how to solve problems. The homework should be handed in to the P235W locker assigned to your workshop leader prior to the deadline. These boxes are at the bottom of the main staircase on the first floor of B&L. The homework assignments will be posted on the web P235W homework page 10 days prior to the deadline. The solutions will be posted on the homework solutions webpage 5 days after the deadline. It is crucial that you work through these problem sets or you will have serious problems with the examinations.

Reading:
Reading assignments will be given prior to each lecture. The knowledge gained from this pre-lecture reading should enable you to extract more from each lecture. Reading Taylor, or other textbooks, in parallel with class notes is important. It is crucial that students keep up with the material since each lecture is based on understanding material presented in prior lectures. The calculus of scalar and vector fields as well as gravitation will be covered as reading assignments since this material should be familiar to you and there is insufficient to cover this material in class. Lecture notes will be provided on these two topics.

Term paper:
One term paper will be assigned towards the end of term. The purpose of the Term Paper is to have you study one practical application of classical mechanics that was not discussed in the lectures. The term paper also forms the basis for satisfying one unit of upper-level writing credit. It is due 10 December.

Examinations:
Two 90 minute term examinations will be given on Tuesday 23 October and Tuesday 13 November 1930-2100 hours. The final examination will be given Monday 17 December at 1915-2215 hours.
